A performative evening introducing L1 Association’s artists in the frame of the project Be SpectACTive in collaboration with and hosted by Bakelit MAC. As the original date in May had to be cancelled due to the lockdown, the artists are offering their work online.

During these 3 evenings, L1-artists are going to show their current works exploring performativity from different angles.

About L1 Association in short:

L1 Independent Artists Association of Public Utility started off as a grassroots initiative in 1998. It was officially established in 2002 and renewed in 2011 with a different corporate structure and with new members. Its mission is to secure professional support for independent Hungarian artists of performing and creative arts on both national and international level.

Independent artists who currently make their living outside the formal organizational structures are scarce of available possibilities to train themselves, to get support or to perform their works in Hungary. These conditions unable them to produce high quality creative work. The positive and constructive professional environment what the association provides for its artists is vital for them in order to integrate in the local, national, international blood-circulation, to enrich their professional advancement and to gain access to more.

L1’s goal is to back up those Hungarian performing and creative artists who freshly start their career and/or just active there for a while by supplying them with professional background and real practical knowledge in order to create a mutually listening working context. The focus is on the personal professional advancement, self-training and creating possibilities to show themselves. Thus the association’s membership broadens with the resident artists of the programme, strengthens its crowd base, enriches it artistic portfolio and presents valuable works of art to the Hungarian audience.

Instead of Me not We will come, no one will exist.

The masterpiece is a video performance created for the Ludwig Museum’s Slow Life. Radical everyday life. entitled exhibition. The work is placed in the conceptual framework of this exhibition, in addition to minimizing character and scenery and it outlines long-standing concepts such as ethical consumption, conscious existence and puritanical living style.

The performance fuses the right to breathe, the raison d’être of silence, into biodiversity.

The union of trivial use of objects with sacred movements and immobility becomes a mass where there is no God because he is “dead” and no human, exists only as an anthropocene unity.

In the heat of the digital revolution we forgot about it but the coronavirus-epidemic has enlightened again: the alpha and the omega of human relationships is presence.

Every traditional performative art genre is a kind of human relationship. Hence it is bound to place, time, and presence. As they are stepping out to the digital space, their essence is transforming.

At least as much as our feelings and values in isolation. Locked down for weeks, losing all real connection with the Other, we are completely stripped down. We lose our goals and plans, only the lack and the desire stays. The desire for coexistence. But all that remains is the online space to reach for each other. The datastream that we may have thought we knew since we created it – was wrong.

On this evening a naked man and a woman are dancing their desire for each other – or better say for the high-tech data recording devices. This time it exposes their bodies and souls for the virtual space in the way how information technology actually perceives it.

Three L1-members who happen to be independent artists reviving a work which existed of two versions already:

metro action appeared in unusual situations like in the M1 metro line as a duet by Márta Ladjánszki and Zsolt Varga in 2010 and was joined by Zsolt Koroknai for the M3 line in 2020. In the present situation where theatre visits are not possible we try to move our work from the tunnel into the black box.
