Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM) brings together partners from Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia with the aim to empower female artists and to promote their visibility and representation. In addition to this, the project will call attention to the image of women in comics. Now MagNet Community House presents a selection of material from the Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM) exhibition in Serbia and Hungary.

The Bakelit Multi Art Center Foundation is the Hungarian partner in the collaboration, who invited 12 artists selected through a competition to create short comic strips in the framework of WOMCOM during the Zánka residency from 17 September to 1 October, 2023. The artists were given feedback by the invited mentors, Márton Hegedűs and Dr Eszter Szép, and together they pulsed through the programmes in the countryside and in Budapest. The completed works will be presented in traveling exhibitions by the partners.

The WOMCOM call for entries was open to anyone creating comics, zines, webcomics, manga or illustrations. Anyone who thought comics were useful for exploring the power of women and telling stories about women. Who is dissatisfied with the way women are portrayed in mainstream comics and pop culture products, especially in South-East Europe. Who wanted to contribute to changing this image and, last but not least, who wanted to use comics as a means to attempt to change patriarchy, gender inequality and other related forms of social inequality.

Who also likes to travel and meet like-minded artists.

The project manager is contemporary choreographer and dance artist Márta Ladjánszki, artistic director of the L1 Association, international contact person of Bakelite MAC.
